Why We Started Red Hot Marriage (And Why We Almost Didn't Make It)

We've known each other for 34 years. Married for almost 30 of them. And there were seasons — real seasons — where we weren't sure we were going to make it.

That's not the kind of thing pastors say out loud. It's not the kind of thing you put on a podcast. But it's the truth, and truth is kind of the whole point of what we're doing here.

Red Hot Marriage didn't start as a podcast. It started as a phrase we heard as teenagers — before we were even married — about what a marriage could be. Passionate. Alive. Connected. And over the years, "red hot" stopped just meaning the spark between us and started meaning something deeper: Honest. Open. Transparent.

H.O.T. That's our framework. That's what we believe every marriage is designed to become.

We're Sherpas, Not Experts

Here's the difference between someone who went to school to learn about marriage and someone who has actually lived it: the Sherpas know where the landmines are.

If you've ever seen footage of climbers on Everest, the Sherpas are the ones who make the journey possible. They're not just carrying equipment — they've walked this trail before. They know where the ice is unstable, where you stop and breathe, where danger hides.

That's us. We're not relationship experts who studied theory in a classroom. We're people who have been in the middle of the fire and found a way through. We've sat with hundreds of couples over the years in pastoral ministry and coaching, and we've navigated our own set of landmines that most of our friends didn't even know existed.

Breast cancer. Homelessness. Financial devastation. Our son coming out. And yes — pornography addiction, betrayal trauma, and the long road back to a marriage that is genuinely, deeply alive.

That last one? That's the reason we're here.

The Help That Wasn't There

For years, when Erik was struggling with porn addiction, the advice available to men in Christian circles was pretty much: pray more, fast more, try harder. We don't think that's enough. We know it isn't, because we tried it.

But here's what really broke Diana's heart — there was almost nothing available for the women. The betrayed wives were out there alone. No community, no tools, no one saying "I see you, and this is not your fault."

When Erik started seeing men find real freedom, Diana made a decision. She chose to stop protecting the private parts of their story and start using them to help other women walk out of the dark.

That decision is what became Red Hot Marriage.

What "Making It" Actually Means

We've sat across from couples who say "we never fight" like it's a badge of honor. And we want to gently tell you: that's not peace. That's either avoidance or emotional disconnection.

Real marriage isn't about arriving somewhere. It's not a destination where you unpack your bags and say, "We made it — now we coast." Because the only way to coast is downhill.

Building a red-hot marriage is an ongoing, intentional climb. You're always moving from one level of connection to the next. The moment you stop climbing, you start sliding. We've seen it. We've lived it.

Two completely different people, sharing one life — that takes effort. It takes honesty. It takes the willingness to be known, even the parts you're not proud of.

This Is for You

Whether you're six months into marriage or 26 years in. Whether you're doing pretty well or quietly wondering if you're going to make it. Whether you're the one who caused the damage or the one absorbing it.

We built this for you.

Our hope is that something we share — something we paid thousands of dollars in therapy to learn, something we earned through seasons we don't talk about in Sunday morning services — saves you time, saves your marriage, and gives you hope that there is a way through.

Because there is.

We're living proof.
